Prepare a Budget: Scripture References

If you and your spouse need to plan for a money makeover, then you should focus on learning how to prepare a budget.

Luke 16: 10-12 states, "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in what is another man's, who will give you what is your own?:

There are two points that Jesus makes in this scripture. The first being that eternal benefits will come from our earthly investments when we resist making money our servant.

The second is how our integrity is measured by how we hand the details of managing money. He tells us to be honest and faithful. To sum it up, God's philosophy is simple - "Be faithful in the small things and I'll bless you with more".

God wants us to be a servant to Him. Learning to prepare a budget will help us to grow closer to God and practice oneness for our marriage covenant. When we are in debt, we are a servant to others. God will provide for us, but he does expect us to do our own part. Tithing with a good attitude and not living beyond your means is a good place to start. Phillipians 4:12 tells us how Paul learned to be content in whatever he had and not to complain. Become a good steward for God and set up a budget with your spouse to start on the path to financial freedom.

Workbooks and worksheets are offered in books by Dave Ramsey, Larry Burkett, and Elli Kaye. They also offer very specific details regarding income, cash-flow, spending, and debt-reduction of loan and/or credit cards. My advice to you is to purchase one of those books and get started on a budget with your spouse as soon as possible. Remember, reducing debt reduces stress!
